Today we bring you some tips for you to participate 100% and actively participate in your Medicare Advantage plan review.

Many people get calls from agents who don't really know what they are offering because they don't even know their plan and they have to look up their Medicare card, so it is extremely important to know your plan. When you know your plan and someone calls you offering you a different plan, you should ask the person to detail the benefits and the costs that the new plan offers you, because there are people who accept a plan and suddenly the new plan that they acquired is not favorable, and sometimes this happens because, unfortunately, there are agents who are only looking to make a transaction with you by making a change. This is why you need to participate in this review and the most important thing to review is to know the plan you have. Know exactly the company you have it with and the name of the plan.

Another point is the different costs. Know what the plan's out-of-pocket maximum is, if you don't know the plan's out-of-pocket maximum there is a big problem, because you need to know it to know the maximum you would pay per year if you get to use the plan to the maximum. Remember that these plans generally have zero monthly premium, but you do have to pay certain co-payments or deductibles as you use the plan. If you reach the plan's maximum, you would pay that maximum out-of-pocket. You should also know what the hospitalization copayment is, because this can be one of the highest copayments these plans have. Additionally, know other co-payments such as visiting a specialist or for medications, because it is important for that person to include in the review the cost of specialists and medications, because not all plans cover medications in the same way. Some have a different cost or there are plans that cover it better than others.

You should also know what benefits you have with your plan, i.e., how much you get for dental, vision, or products such as hearing aids if you wear hearing aids.

A few days ago one of our clients was switched to another plan where she was told that she would have greater savings, but in reality this was a plan with fewer benefits. For example, with the one she already had, she had a dental benefit of $2,000 per year and the new plan only offered her $100 per quarter, that is, $400 per year. So you realize that knowing your plan is extremely important.

When you do a review, have a pad and pencil handy, put the name of your plan on one side and the name of the plan you are being offered on the other side and write down the costs, co-payments and benefits of your current plan and ask for details on the new plan. This is the only way you can actively participate and protect yourself from making a change that is not in your best interest.

When you make a plan change with a person, they become your agent. If you have questions or need help later, this agent should be available to you, so we recommend that if someone calls you, ask for their contact information. For example, their first and last name, phone number, email so you can keep in touch with them if you need to.

So, know your plan, know what you have so you know what you are being offered and you authorize a change that is beneficial to you, and also know the person who is offering you the plan, who will be your personal agent.
