This time we will talk about the Medicare Supplement Plan None of the few plans that were added to the Medicare plan mix in 2010 as part of the Medicare Modernization Act. Since then this plan has been the fastest growing plan of choice among seniors enrolled in Medicare supplement plans.
While Plan N is not as robust as Plan G, the differences are minimal, so Plan N offers outstanding coverage at a lower premium than other alternatives. Generally, Plan N's monthly premium is 15% to 20% cheaper than Plan G, making it a very cost-effective solution for members on a limited budget. Now, one of the main reasons why Plan N is so popular is that even with a lower premium, it provides 100% of hospital coverage, just like Plans C, D, F and G.
Then, Plan N covers your Part A hospital insurance, Part A deductible, hospice copayment, skilled nursing facility copayment, and first three pints of blood. Therefore, if you are hospitalized, you will have zero out-of-pocket costs for covered Part A services.
It also includes an emergency foreign travel benefit. So you know that this plan has very good coverage for a very well priced plan and all that it offers.
Now, what does plan N not cover? Very similar to plan G.
This plan does not cover the Part B deductible, which is currently $226 for this year 2023. As you might recall from our previous articles, this deductible is generally paid piecemeal as you visit the doctor throughout the year. However, unlike Plan G and other plans, once the Part B deductible has been met for the year, with this Medicare Plan N you will have to pay a fixed copayment of an additional $20 for each doctor visit during the year and a copayment of $50 for emergency room visits.
These copayments go toward your Part B insurance, which would normally be 20% if you do not have medical coverage. In addition, you will not be charged the $50 copayment for emergency room visits if you are admitted to the hospital during the same visit.
Finally, Medicare Supplement plan N does not cover Part B excess charges. Personally, this is really the only drawback of Plan N compared to Plan G, but as long as you visit physicians who accept Medicare assignment which is the majority, you will likely not be subject to excess charges.
We remind you that these charges are a maximum of 15% above what Medicare considers usual and customary for any medical procedure that may be performed.
It's easy to understand why this plan is rapidly gaining popularity while losing minimal coverage for doctor visits and outpatient services. It remains extremely robust, giving you excellent coverage against hospitalizations and with a premium savings of 15% to 20% over Plan G, making this plan often the most logical and most economical solution.
