You may have wondered what you could do if you don't have the credits or quarters to qualify for Medicare, right?
Most people receive Medicare Part A at no cost for the time they have worked and paid Social Security contributions for at least ten years. This ten years means 40 quarters or credits, which is the time Medicare requires.
The people who tend not to qualify or meet this requirement are immigrants, because they may not have been in the country long enough and have not worked long enough to accumulate these 40 credits. But Medicare has provided a few options to ease this requirement, and one of them is that you are currently married, for at least one year, and your spouse is eligible for Social Security benefits. Thus, you can apply for Medicare by calling the Social Security number in your area or on their website: www.ssa.gov. There is an online option to apply for Medicare using your spouse's credits.
The other option is that you have been married for at least ten years, and this person is also eligible for Medicare benefits. So you can apply for Medicare using this person's credits. You need to prove that you were married to this person for at least ten years, as common-law status does not apply in this case.
If one of these two options is not valid for you, because you do not meet them, you must definitely purchase Medicare Part A and the cost will depend on the cost of how many credits you have accumulated up to the time of application.
