If you have a health marketplace plan and you are close to age 65, please note: Plans offered in the health marketplace, such as ObamaCare plans, are plans for people who do not have health coverage and provide a subsidy at a very low monthly premium. But you should also be aware that this subsidy offered by these plans does not qualify a person who is eligible for Medicare Part A at no cost. If you have one of these plans and do not cancel it when you enroll in Medicare, you will most likely have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium when you file your taxes next year.
Don't get confused. If you have Medicare, no one can call you and offer you one of these health marketplace policies because it is against the law, because when you file your taxes it can be a very bitter surprise to you that you suddenly won't be able to afford to pay those premiums because you didn't cancel the state-subsidized policy as you approach your 65th birthday.
In addition, if you delay enrolling in Medicare Part B by maintaining one of these health marketplace policies, you will also be fined for not enrolling. And this penalty is 10% for each 12-month period that you delay Part B enrollment. So, share this information with someone who is entering Medicare and has one of these policies and is thinking about keeping it or is on the fence about whether to move to Medicare or stay with that policy.
