For people who only have Original Medicare, which is Part A and Part B of Medicare, since it is federal coverage, it will cover you throughout the United States; so, if you move states, it will cover you in your new state. But if you have an Advantage plan, a prescription drug plan or a supplemental plan, this is where you need to make some changes. That is, if you move states or areas, your current plan may not be available, so you will lose this coverage.
It is extremely important that you inform the Medicare office that you are moving so that Medicare can update this address. Ideally, you should do this one month before you move so that the new plan starts in this new area on the first of the month you move, but you also have two months following your move to make this change.
It is advisable to do it as soon as possible after moving to that area, because remember that these special periods have certain windows of time to enroll. So if you miss that window you will lose coverage under your Medicaid Advantage or supplemental plan.
When you move out of the area, you can also choose to switch plans or return to Original Medicare if you prefer.
