For all those individuals who have a Medicare Advantage plan, a prescription drug plan, and missed the opportunity to make a plan review or change, if necessary, during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid has created the new Special Period, to give those individuals who have been unable to enroll in Medicare because of the COVID-19 impact, the opportunity to enroll during this period and make a review, comparison, or change in their Medicare services.

Remember that it is always necessary and advisable to do a review of plans, because some of them tend to change, health tends to change. For example, maybe you now have different and more expensive medications, that is, you may be paying a little more with your current plan, because it depends on the level of the medication in your plan, you may want to do a review and find a plan that better accommodates those new needs.

Likewise, you must take into account the doctors, since there are plans that from one time to another or from one year to another, the doctors may change or no longer accept certain plans.

So, if you are one of those people who missed one of these periods, either the Annual Enrollment Period or your Initial Enrollment Period, because you did not check and missed the three months after your birthday to do a review for these plans. Even if you missed the Open Enrollment Period, which was from January 1 through March 31, you can still do this review and make a change if appropriate.

For this review it is very important to know, in reality, what you have with your current plan, the cost of the drugs or the cost of the different co-payments, premiums and deductibles when using the plan, for example, in the case of a hospitalization, in the case of attending laboratory specialists. That is why it is extremely important for you to know what your current plan offers so that you can compare it with another plan.

Sometimes we take those calls from people or agents offering us a plan with, supposedly, greater savings, greater benefits, but if you don't know what you have with your plan, it's going to be very difficult for you to actually participate in this review.

If you know someone on Medicare who has one of these Medicare Advantage plans, ask them if they have already had a review.
