This time we will talk about the Medicare Supplemental Plan B (Medigap Plan B)not Part B of Original Medicare.
Remember that Part B is one of the parts that make up Original Medicare and Plan B is one of many Medicare Supplement plans designed to help you fill gaps in Medicare coverage.
Like all other Medicare Supplement plans, Plan B is standardized, which means the benefits are the same for all insurance companies. The price is usually the only difference, but let's get to know exactly what Plan B is and what benefits it includes and what it does not include.
If you read our previous article regarding Medicare Supplement Plan A, you will recall that Plan A does not cover the Part A hospital deductible. The difference between Plans A and B Supplemental is that Plan B does cover the Part A deductible, saving you for each hospital visit.
Like Plan A, Plan B Supplemental also covers 100% of hospital insurance as your copayment or as insurance for hospice care and the first three pints of blood during any hospitalization for a medical procedure.
As for hospital coverage, plan B is a bit more robust than plan A, covering your Part A hospital admission deductible, and if you are hospitalized several times a year, this would be a great savings. While Plan B will cover your Part B insurance, doctors and medical services, it will not cover the Part B deductible.
Remember that the Part B deductible is an annual deductible, which means that you will pay this amount once a year and is usually paid little by little as you visit your doctor.
Finally, just like Plan A, Medicare Supplement Plan B does not cover overseas emergencies or Part B excess surcharges. If you don't remember what Part B excess surcharges are, these are rare, and they are doctors and providers in some areas that do not accept Medicare assignment, so they charge a little more than what Medicare considers usual and customary for any outpatient service or procedure, but these providers cannot charge you more than 15% in addition to Medicare assignment, and although these excess surcharges are still very rare, it is still something that is put into consideration.
While it is obvious that Medicare Supplement Plan B has slightly more coverage than Plan A, there are still some differences in coverage that can expose you to very expensive medical bills.
In conclusion, although this plan gives you extra benefits, it is worth considering other Medigap plans that are more comprehensive in protecting you as well as saving you money.
